FEMI ADESINA URGES FULL ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION OF RESULTS FOR 2027 ELECTIONS
Ibadan, January 31, 2026: Former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to late President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina, has called on the Nigerian media to reject fake news, strengthen election monitoring, and ensure the full implementation of electronic transmission of results ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adesina made the remarks while delivering the keynote address at the Melody 100.7 FM Anniversary Media Lecture, themed: “The Media and National Stability: Navigating the 2027 Elections with Responsibility and Patriotism.” The lecture took place at Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, opposite the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
He warned that the overreliance on social media for breaking news has weakened professional journalism standards, stressing that journalists must verify facts before reporting. “If in doubt, leave out,” he advised, calling for ethical gatekeeping to prevent misinformation that could destabilize the nation ahead of the polls.
Scrutiny and Constructive Reporting
Adesina urged media practitioners to go beyond routine reporting by scrutinizing electoral processes, advocating for timely enactment and enforcement of enabling laws, prompt release of INEC funding, and robust voter education campaigns to reduce voter apathy.
“Part of constructive reporting is ensuring enabling laws are enacted on time, budgets released promptly, and voter education intensified. Tough penalties for vote buying, ballot stuffing, and destruction must be applied,” he said, noting the failure to punish offenders from the 2023 elections could encourage repeat violations in 2027.
Electronic Transmission of Results
On electoral reforms, Adesina criticised the non-implementation of electronic transmission of results in 2023, despite legal provisions. He described ignoring the law as a “crime” and urged the media to ensure this critical reform is enforced in 2027.
“If the law says results must be transmitted electronically and it does not happen, and results are declared, it’s a crime. The media must ensure electronic transmission becomes a reality,” he emphasized.
Using Off-Season Elections as a Test
Adesina also suggested that upcoming off-season elections in Ekiti and Osun states serve as test cases to assess preparedness for the 2027 general elections, calling for continuous media literacy, voter education, and strict enforcement of electoral laws to safeguard national stability.
