FIRE RAZES OFFICES, DESTROYS DOCUMENTS AT KWARA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
A late-night fire outbreak gutted parts of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, on Friday, January 30, 2026, destroying offices and valuable documents.
The fire, which started around 9:14 p.m., engulfed a building on the college premises, prompting a swift response from the Kwara State Fire Service. The affected structure contained offices primarily used as storage spaces, and several sensitive materials, including documents, files, and journals, were damaged.
According to Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the fire service, “Three out of four offices in the building were affected, but through the prompt response of our team, nearby facilities, including the Biology Laboratory and other academic buildings, were saved from the blaze.”
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by an individual setting undergrowth ablaze, which subsequently spread to the college building. No casualties were reported.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, CFS Alabi Muhammed, advised institutions and the public to avoid indiscriminate bush and undergrowth burning. He emphasized proper storage of sensitive documents and the provision of basic firefighting equipment to minimize losses during emergencies.
Kwara State has experienced multiple recent fire incidents, including one that destroyed property worth millions of naira at Owode Market in Offa and another in Ilorin’s Irewolede area, which reportedly claimed the life of a 73-year-old man identified as Pastor Awolola.
College authorities have assured staff and students that recovery efforts are underway, and measures are being taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Administrative activities may experience minor disruptions, but academic operations are expected to continue.
