MASSIVE FIRE DESTROYS SHOPS, RESTAURANTS ALONG GOMBE–YOLA ROAD
A devastating fire outbreak early Saturday morning razed shops, roadside containers, and restaurant outlets at New Mile 3 along the Gombe–Yola Road in Gombe State, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m., rapidly spreading across the commercial area and affecting over 80 per cent of the establishments in the vicinity. Despite the scale of destruction, no casualties or injuries were reported.
Confirming the incident, Amb. Yusuf Danbayo, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters and Intergovernmental Affairs, credited the timely response of security and emergency agencies for preventing a more catastrophic outcome.
“The fire outbreak destroyed shops, mini containers, and restaurant outlets, but thankfully, no lives were lost,” Danbayo said. He commended the professionalism of security personnel from the DPO Tumfure Division, Pantami Division, and Operation Hattara, noting that their coordinated efforts ensured crowd control and maintained law and order throughout the emergency.
Firefighting teams, including the Federal Fire Service, Gombe State University Fire Service, and the Union of Tank Truck Water Sellers, were also praised for their relentless work in containing the blaze. Their continuous water supply and deployment of fire engines were instrumental in preventing the fire from reaching nearby fuel stations, which could have resulted in a catastrophic explosion.
Community leaders, led by Alhaji Auwal Abdulkadir, Chairman of Mile 3, alongside other stakeholders, also played a crucial role in managing the situation and ensuring the safety of the surrounding residents.
The authorities have assured that efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and implement measures to prevent future incidents.
