ONDO POLICE CRACK DOWN ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING, RESCUE 14 VICTIMS, ARREST SUSPECTS
In a major operational success against human trafficking and trans-national criminal networks, the Ondo State Police Command has arrested multiple suspects and rescued 14 victims across Ondo State.
Under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, the command acted swiftly after receiving reports of victims being lured into Nigeria under false promises of employment abroad.
On Thursday, January 22, 2026, a Togolese national, Meale Yaoili, escaped from a human trafficking syndicate and reported the case at Yaba Police Station. He stated that he was deceived into leaving Togo for Nigeria with the promise of securing employment in Canada, only to have his personal belongings confiscated and be held against his will.
Following coordinated action, police arrested six suspects linked to the syndicate, identified as Cleude Grao, Samuel Dsiwa, Michael Amissa, Olayiwola Kazeem, Akinubi Adebayo, and Oluwole Vincent, the landlord of the premises. Three victims were successfully rescued during the operation.
In a separate development on January 23, 2026, a case initially reported as banditry in Oba-Ile led to the discovery of a trans-national trafficking network. Investigations revealed that Umaru Baba and eleven others, all illegal immigrants from Chad, were being exploited under the guise of commission-based marketing jobs. The individuals, aged between 19 and 26, were residing in a duplex in Akure.
Police identified Umaru Baba as the central figure in the network, alleged to be engaged in recruitment, trafficking, and modern-day slavery. All eleven Chadian nationals are being treated as victims and are in police protection while investigations continue.
Efforts to question the landlord of the property, a woman residing in Ibadan, are ongoing. Authorities emphasized that property owners must conduct proper tenant background checks to prevent illegal activities on their premises, warning that negligence will attract legal consequences.
The Commissioner of Police commended the support of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, noting that reforms and technological innovations have enhanced operational efficiency across the state.
CP Lawal assured the public of the command’s unwavering commitment to combating human trafficking, trans-border crimes, and other criminal activities, urging citizens to provide credible intelligence to support policing efforts.
