PDP STATE CHAIRMEN DECLARE FULL SUPPORT FOR NWC, INSIST IBADAN CONVENTION LEADERSHIP REMAINS LAWFUL
The Forum of State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its full support for the National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), and the National Working Committee (NWC) constituted at the party’s Ibadan National Convention.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the Forum—comprising PDP chairmen from 30 states of the federation—said it had carefully reviewed the judgment recently delivered by the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, alongside the official position already articulated by the party’s national leadership.
The Forum expressed concern that while the court declined the relief of mandamus sought by the PDP, it proceeded to grant reliefs that were neither requested nor canvassed by the parties before it. According to the statement, the judgment also appears to conflict with existing decisions of courts of coordinate jurisdiction on the same subject matter.
Despite these concerns, the Forum described it as reassuring that the party has already exercised its constitutional right of appeal and filed the necessary applications for a stay of execution, in line with established legal and democratic processes.
Aligning itself with the position of the NWC, the Forum emphasized that the judgment represents only one stage in an ongoing judicial process, noting that the substantive issues are currently before the Court of Appeal for final determination.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the National Working Committee produced by the Ibadan Convention remains the lawful, recognised, and operational leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party,” the statement read, adding that the NWC continues to enjoy the confidence and loyalty of party structures across the 30 states represented in the Forum.
The PDP state chairmen urged party members, supporters, and stakeholders nationwide to remain calm, united, and focused, stressing that there is no leadership vacuum within the party and no cause for panic.
The statement further noted that the PDP has endured and overcome similar challenges in the past, describing the current situation as part of the normal judicial process rather than a final outcome.
Reaffirming their commitment to party unity and reform, the Forum said it remains dedicated to the rebirth and rebuilding of the PDP, with a focus on strengthening internal democracy and repositioning the party as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The statement was jointly signed by Hon. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Forum of PDP State Chairmen and Chairman of the PDP Edo State Chapter, and Chief Edward Masha, Forum Secretary and Chairman of the PDP Kaduna State Chapter, on behalf of the 30 PDP state chairmen.
