PDP GOES INTO EXTINCTION AS ANOTHER GOV DUMPS PARTY FOR APC
Jalingo, Taraba State — January 31, 2026
Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political realignment in the North-East region.
The governor was formally received on Saturday in Jalingo by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the ceremony attended by party leaders, government officials, and supporters.
Speaking at the event, Vice President Shettima described Governor Kefas’ decision as a timely and strategic move that aligns with the founding ideals of the APC, which he said was established as a broad coalition of Nigerians committed to national development.
According to Shettima, Taraba State remains a vital part of Nigeria’s growth trajectory due to its diversity and abundant resources, stressing that the governor’s inclusive leadership style makes him a natural fit for the ruling party.
“The APC was conceived as a meeting point for development-driven Nigerians. Today, it is a thing of pride that Taraba State has joined this fold. We welcome our brother home,” Shettima said.
The Vice President commended Kefas for his understanding of Taraba’s ethnic and religious diversity and urged residents of the state to rally behind him to advance development and unity. He also described the governor as the undisputed leader of the APC in Taraba State.
The defection follows earlier reports in December 2025 that Governor Kefas would formally join the APC in January 2026. His planned defection had earlier been postponed from November 19, following the kidnapping of students in Kebbi State, which the governor said required national attention and sensitivity.
Also speaking at the ceremony, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwada, described the defection as a major boost for both the party and Taraba State, noting that it would help unlock the state’s vast economic and developmental potential.
“Joining the APC is one of the best decisions for Taraba State. The state is richly endowed, and this alignment will position it for greater development,” Yilwada said.
He called on party stakeholders to embrace unity and inclusiveness, assuring both existing and new members of fairness and equal opportunities within the party.
In his response, Governor Kefas expressed gratitude to the APC national leadership and the Federal Government, stating that his decision was driven solely by the interest of Taraba State and its people.
“This is not about power, but purpose. We must align in order to deliver development. We will work together to redefine the future we desire for ourselves and generations yet unborn,” the governor said.
Kefas emphasized that his defection would not affect his mandate, but rather strengthen his capacity to deliver sustainable development, fairness, and good governance. He also praised President Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a leader with a deep understanding of governance and results-driven policies.
The governor declared Taraba State open for investment and development, expressing optimism that the new political alignment would accelerate growth and improve the welfare of citizens.
