EGBETOKUN RESIGNATION DETAILS EMERGE AMID PRESIDENCY CONFIRMATION

The Presidency has confirmed the resignation of Mr. Kayode Egbetokun as Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), stating that he voluntarily stepped down due to personal reasons requiring his full attention.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that the former police chief submitted a letter of resignation on Monday, citing family matters as the basis for his decision.

“The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention,” the presidential aide said.

However, senior sources within the Presidency indicated that Mr. Egbetokun was invited to a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening, where discussions reportedly led to his exit from office.

According to officials familiar with the development, the meeting was not routine. Observers at the State House confirmed that the former IGP’s official vehicle arrived at the Villa shortly before an interfaith Iftar hosted by the President for state governors.

Security sources further noted that Mr. Egbetokun returned to the Villa later in the evening, where standard security protocols were observed.

Mr. Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023. Prior to his appointment, he served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department. He succeeded Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure ended in September 2023 following an extension.

During his tenure, Nigeria faced significant security challenges, including incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and attacks in several states. Recent cases that drew national attention included the abduction of schoolchildren in Niger State in late 2025 and deadly attacks in parts of North-Central Nigeria in early 2026.

At the interfaith gathering with governors on Monday, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening internal security, including plans to advance the establishment of state police structures. He emphasized that security remains central to national development and economic stability.

As of press time, there was no official announcement regarding the appointment of a successor.
