GUNMEN ATTACK PETER OBI, ODIGIE-OYEGUN, ADC LEADERS DURING POLITICAL EVENT IN EDO

Former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, were reportedly attacked by armed men during a political engagement in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday.

The incident was disclosed in a statement by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide and former campaign spokesman to Mr. Obi. According to the statement, the attack occurred shortly after a political event marking the formal declaration of Mr. Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Tanko alleged that armed individuals trailed the political figures from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Odigie-Oyegun, where gunshots were reportedly fired at the gate and several vehicles within the premises were damaged.

Images and videos circulating online showed shattered windscreens of sport utility vehicles and visible damage to the entrance gate of the residence. As of press time, there were no confirmed reports of casualties.

The Edo State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the incident at the time of filing this report. Efforts to obtain confirmation from security authorities were ongoing.

The reported attack comes amid heightened political activities and tensions in parts of the country. Observers note that the development underscores growing concerns over the safety of political actors during campaign events and party realignments.

The incident also follows recent political disputes surrounding the February 21 Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mr. Christopher Maikalangu of the APC as winner of the poll with 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast. The ADC candidate, Dr. Moses Paul, secured 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party candidate polled 3,398 votes.

Dr. Paul and members of the Obidient Movement have rejected the outcome of the election, alleging irregularities and calling for a review of the process. INEC has yet to respond publicly to those allegations.

Political analysts have called for restraint and urged security agencies to ensure the protection of all political stakeholders, emphasizing the need to safeguard democratic processes.

Further details are expected as investigations continue.
