OGUN STATE COMMENCES BLOOD TESTS FOR 500 RESIDENTS FOLLOWING LEAD CONTAMINATION CONCERNS

The Ogun State Government has initiated a comprehensive health audit of residents in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, following reports of potential lead exposure in the community. Over 500 residents have had blood samples collected to determine Blood Lead Levels (BLLs) in a scientifically structured assessment.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, disclosed that the audit is part of a broader initiative directed by Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure an independent, transparent, and credible evaluation. The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has been engaged to conduct the study impartially.

“Shortly after the reports emerged, both the Ministries of Health and Environment visited the communities to allay fears and outline a clear monitoring, evaluation, and response framework,” Dr Coker stated. She added that environmental audits were conducted, and factories identified as potential risks were temporarily closed.

In November 2025, seven battery recycling factories in the Ogijo axis were shut down due to concerns over lead contamination, and the exportation of lead ingots was temporarily suspended pending investigations.

During a stakeholders’ engagement at Ologijo Palace, Dr Coker emphasized that NIMR’s scientific approach includes stratified sampling covering vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant and lactating women, and other residents in the affected areas. Laboratory analyses will be carried out with integrity, and findings will be submitted to the Governor with actionable recommendations.

Some facilities previously sealed have since reopened following compliance assessments, but Dr Coker confirmed that ongoing monitoring of blood lead levels will continue for workers in the relevant industries. The government affirmed its commitment to public health, safety, and sustainable solutions for the community.

The traditional ruler, Oba Kazeem Gbadamosi, commended the government for timely intervention, transparent engagement, and the professional handling of the audit, assuring residents’ cooperation throughout the process.

The initiative highlights Ogun State’s proactive stance in addressing environmental health concerns while ensuring scientific rigor and community participation in safeguarding public welfare.
