ABASS CALLS FOR RETURN OF PERFORMING LAWMAKERS, PUSHES FOR CONTINUITY AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prioritise the return of committed and performing lawmakers in the 2027 general elections, emphasizing the need for continuity to strengthen governance and legislative effectiveness.
Abbas made the call on Friday while addressing party stakeholders at the APC National Convention held in Abuja. He highlighted the negative impact of frequent turnover in the National Assembly, noting that it weakens institutional memory and disrupts legislative progress.
According to the Speaker, sustaining ongoing reforms requires stability not only within the executive arm of government but also in the legislature.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for pursuing reform-driven policies, stating that such efforts require time, consistency, and institutional support to achieve lasting results.
“Reform is a continuous process that demands commitment and stability. The progress recorded so far must be sustained through deliberate continuity,” Abbas said.
He further noted that improvements in revenue allocation to states, increased transparency, infrastructural development, and enhanced security coordination are indicators of ongoing reforms that should not be disrupted.
Abbas stressed that the legislature plays a critical role in supporting these reforms through lawmaking, oversight, and representation, warning that constant replacement of lawmakers often leads to loss of experience and increased public expenditure on training new members.
“The high turnover of legislators over the years has come at a cost to governance. Experience is lost, institutional memory is weakened, and progress is slowed,” he stated.
The Speaker called on party leaders and stakeholders to ensure deliberate efforts in supporting lawmakers who have demonstrated competence and commitment to public service.
He added that both the executive and legislative arms must work in synergy to sustain national development and policy implementation.
“We cannot afford to restart progress at every electoral cycle. Continuity is essential for building on existing foundations and achieving long-term national goals,” Abbas added.
The APC National Convention attracted key political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, governors, ministers, federal lawmakers, and thousands of party delegates from across the country.
The convention also featured discussions on party unity, governance direction, and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
