INEC EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR PARTY MEMBERSHIP REGISTER SUBMISSION AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an adjustment to its timetable for the 2027 General Election, extending the deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members.
The decision was reached following a meeting between the Commission and political parties held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, where concerns were raised regarding the initial timeline set for submissions.
Originally, political parties were expected to submit their membership registers between April 1 and April 21, 2026. However, INEC has now revised the schedule to better align with the statutory requirement of 21 days stipulated under Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026.
Under the updated timetable, political parties are permitted to conduct their primaries within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, 2026. INEC emphasized that strict adherence to this schedule is essential to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process.
The Commission further clarified that each political party must submit its register of members at least 21 days before the date of its primary election. Consequently, the final deadline for submission has been extended to May 10, 2026, replacing the earlier deadline of April 21, 2026.
INEC reiterated its commitment to working with political parties to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines and to facilitate a transparent and orderly preparation for the 2027 General Election.
The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, on Friday, March 27, 2026.
