NEWS UPDATE: POWER MINISTER ADELABU DISMISSES RESIGNATION CLAIMS AS FALSE AMID 2027 POLITICAL SPECULATION
POWER MINISTER ADELABU DISMISSES RESIGNATION CLAIMS AS FALSE AMID 2027 POLITICAL SPECULATION
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has firmly denied reports claiming he has resigned from his position, describing the circulating information as false and misleading.
The clarification comes amid heightened political speculation following a Federal Government directive requiring political appointees with intentions to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down from office on or before March 31, 2026.
In a response shared with journalists, Adelabu’s Special Assistant on Media, Bolaji Tunji, dismissed the resignation claims, stating that the minister remains actively engaged in his duties.
“The report of the minister’s resignation is not true. It is fake news,” Tunji said, while also sharing images of a purported resignation letter marked as false.
The rumours had gained traction after recent public comments by Adelabu were interpreted by some observers as an indication of possible political ambitions, particularly regarding the Oyo State governorship race.
During a recent briefing in Abuja, the minister emphasized his commitment to addressing Nigeria’s power challenges, noting that his primary focus remains on improving electricity supply across the country.
“What matters most to me now is the responsibility I have as the Minister of Power. My priority is to tackle the challenges in the sector and deliver results,” Adelabu stated.
He acknowledged that discussions around the 2027 elections are ongoing but maintained that no final decision has been made regarding his political future.
“Whether I remain in this role or pursue another path is something that will be determined in due course,” he added.
The Federal Government’s directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, mandates all political appointees seeking elective positions to resign within the stipulated timeframe. The move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral regulations and maintaining transparency in the political process.
Adelabu has been widely speculated to be considering a bid for the Oyo State governorship, although no official declaration has been made.
For now, the minister has reiterated his commitment to his current role, urging the public to disregard unverified reports about his resignation.
