SOWORE BLASTS OPPOSITION SUMMIT, CALLS IT A ‘DANGEROUS RECYCLING OF FAILED LEADERS
Activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has explained his decision to decline an invitation to an opposition summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, stating that Nigeria requires a credible alternative rather than what he described as a recycling of past political actors.
Sowore made his position known in a statement shared via his official social media platform on Sunday, where he expressed strong reservations about the intent and composition of the gathering.
According to him, many of the individuals involved in the summit had previously played roles in Nigeria’s longstanding political and economic challenges, and could not be trusted to drive meaningful change.
He said, “I was invited to attend the so-called ‘Opposition Summit’ in Ibadan, but I declined. There is no need to pretend that the same individuals who presided over stagnation, corruption, and systemic decline can suddenly transform into champions of progress.”
The AAC candidate further stated that his party would not associate with what he termed a misleading political arrangement aimed at repackaging old leadership under a new guise.
“For the avoidance of doubt, our party will not be part of any arrangement designed to recycle political actors who have contributed to Nigeria’s current challenges,” he added.
Sowore maintained that his focus remains on building a people-driven political movement grounded in accountability, transparency, and integrity. He emphasized the need for a complete departure from existing political structures, which he believes have failed to deliver sustainable development.
He also criticised major political parties across the country, arguing that they represent similar political interests despite their differing platforms.
“We are committed to mobilising Nigerians around a credible vision that rejects the failures associated with dominant political parties. Nigeria needs a fundamental shift, not a rebranding of the same system,” he stated.
The opposition summit, held at the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan, brought together key political figures from various parties. The meeting was chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
Other prominent attendees included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, among other political stakeholders.
Organisers of the summit said the gathering, themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” was aimed at fostering collaboration among opposition parties in response to Nigeria’s socio-economic and security challenges, as well as strengthening political alignment ahead of future elections.
However, Sowore’s absence and criticism highlight ongoing divisions within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, as discussions continue over the possibility of forming a unified front in upcoming electoral contests.
