APC TO PRIORITISE MERIT, LOYALTY AND WINNABILITY IN 2027 CANDIDATE SELECTION — AIYEDATIWA

The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will adopt merit, loyalty, and electoral viability as key criteria in selecting its candidates for the 2027 general elections.

The governor also cautioned party aspirants against engaging in desperation or “do-or-die” politics, urging them to uphold discipline and unity within the party.

Aiyedatiwa made these remarks on Friday during the APC Central Senatorial District stakeholders’ meeting held at the Akure Township Hall.

He noted that political activities ahead of the 2027 elections have already begun to gather momentum, outlining that the process would commence with the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms, followed by screening, appeals where necessary, and eventually primaries or consensus arrangements as determined by the party leadership.

According to the governor, the APC is already engaging aspirants across different levels to encourage consensus building, stressing that only one candidate will emerge per position.

“It is not a do-or-die affair. If you are not chosen, do not destabilise the party. Remain committed. Opportunities will always come,” he said.

He also warned against defection by unsuccessful aspirants, encouraging members to remain loyal to the party regardless of the outcome of the primaries. Drawing from personal experience, Aiyedatiwa recalled his unsuccessful senatorial bid in 2018, noting that persistence and loyalty later paved the way for his political advancement.

As part of the party’s strategic objectives, the governor set a target of delivering one million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Ondo State during the 2027 presidential election.

Reaffirming the APC’s commitment to retaining power at both state and national levels, Aiyedatiwa urged members to support the President, citing ongoing federal projects in the state. These include the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Ore–Akure dualisation project, the Akure North axis road, and the Ibadan–Ilesa–Akure–Benin highway. He also referenced improved federal allocations and the student loan scheme as indicators of governance efforts.

The governor further disclosed that the party has expanded its stakeholder structure from 10 to 60 leaders per local government to promote inclusiveness and grassroots participation. He added that consultations have been decentralised across senatorial districts to enhance broader engagement.

In his remarks, the APC State Chairman, Hon. Babatunde Kolawole, reaffirmed the principle of party supremacy, stating that Governor Aiyedatiwa remains the leader of the party in Ondo State.

Kolawole described his role as primarily organisational and assured that the State Working Committee is fully aligned with the governor’s leadership. He warned against divided loyalty and urged aspirants to accept party decisions with maturity.

Also speaking, the APC Central Senatorial Leader, Mr. Kayode Famuyiwa, commended the governor’s leadership and infrastructural strides, noting visible improvements in Akure’s status as a state capital. He advocated the establishment of a College of Agriculture and Food Technology in Idanre to harness the area’s agricultural potential and support youth development.

The Executive Director of Corporate Services at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, expressed satisfaction with the turnout at the meeting and advised aspirants to focus on grassroots consultations while awaiting the party’s decision on the mode of primaries.

Other stakeholders, including political leaders from Ondo East/West, Akure South/North, and Idanre/Ifedore federal constituencies, commended the administration’s development efforts, particularly in infrastructure, education, and urban renewal.

The meeting was attended by top government officials, lawmakers, party executives, and key stakeholders across the state.
