INEC VALIDATES SDP LEADERSHIP AFTER NATIONWIDE STRUCTURE AND MEMBERSHIP VERIFICATION
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has affirmed the leadership structure of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) following a comprehensive verification exercise conducted ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The verification, carried out at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, forms part of INEC’s regulatory requirements to ensure that registered political parties comply with constitutional provisions, maintain functional internal governance, and demonstrate nationwide presence.
Speaking at a press briefing after the exercise, SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, disclosed that an 11-member INEC delegation undertook an extensive review of the party’s organisational framework.
According to him, the process included physical verification of members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC), as well as an assessment of the party’s administrative structure and operations.
“It was an eleven-member INEC team that conducted the verification exercise at our headquarters. One of the requirements for political parties is to have a presence in at least two-thirds of the states of the federation,” Gombe said.
He explained that INEC officials examined both electronic and hard copy versions of the party’s membership register, alongside financial records, staffing structure, and operational systems.
Gombe added that the party presented full representation, including state chairmen from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, demonstrating compliance with legal requirements and internal cohesion.
“We had full participation of NEC members across the federation. This reflects our unity and commitment to due process,” he stated.
The SDP chairman also addressed internal party matters, noting that decisions of the NEC remain binding and are consistent with legal precedents affirming the autonomy of political parties in managing their affairs.
He said the current leadership structure emerged from a duly constituted NEC meeting held in March 2025, with INEC representatives present, adding that judicial rulings have reinforced the legitimacy of the party’s internal processes.
The verification exercise comes amid increasing political activities and alignments across parties as stakeholders prepare for the next general elections. Within this context, the SDP leadership has projected stability and institutional compliance.
Gombe further commended party leaders at state and zonal levels for their support, noting that ongoing membership registration efforts continue to gain traction nationwide.
“We remain committed to strengthening the party and contributing to democratic development in Nigeria,” he said.
The SDP leadership dispute, which previously led to internal contestation, was resolved following a Supreme Court decision that cleared the way for the current leadership to consolidate its position.
