SENATE DECLARES ONDO SOUTH SEAT VACANT AS JIMOH IBRAHIM TAKES UN APPOINTMENT
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared the Ondo South Senatorial District seat vacant following the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
The announcement was made during plenary on Tuesday at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Akpabio explained that the declaration became necessary after Ibrahim, who previously represented Ondo South in the Senate, took up his new diplomatic role, thereby creating a vacancy in the legislative seat.
In line with constitutional provisions and electoral laws, the Senate President directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election within 30 days to fill the vacant position.
He also instructed the Clerk of the National Assembly to formally transmit the Senate’s resolution to INEC for immediate action.
The development is expected to trigger political activities in Ondo South, as parties and potential candidates begin consultations ahead of the anticipated by-election. The senatorial district, comprising Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Irele, Okitipupa, and Odigbo local government areas, remains a politically strategic zone in Ondo State.
Observers note that the forthcoming by-election could serve as a significant test of political strength for parties in the state, particularly as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.
As of the time of this report, INEC has not issued an official statement regarding the scheduling of the by-election.
