OPPOSITION PARTIES ADOPT IBADAN DECLARATION, PLEDGE UNITED FRONT AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

Opposition political parties in Nigeria have adopted a joint communiqué, tagged the Ibadan Declaration, committing to a unified strategy aimed at strengthening multi-party democracy and contesting the 2027 general elections.

The resolution was reached at the Opposition Political Parties National Summit held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in Ibadan, Oyo State, where party leaders and stakeholders deliberated on the political and economic direction of the country.

In the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the parties expressed concerns over governance, electoral processes, and the state of democratic institutions, calling for coordinated action among opposition groups.

A key outcome of the summit is the commitment by participating parties to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. According to the communiqué, such a consensus candidate would be jointly agreed upon and supported across opposition platforms.

The parties also reaffirmed their intention to actively participate in all upcoming elections, rejecting any notion of a one-party system and emphasizing the importance of political plurality in Nigeria’s democracy.

On electoral reforms, the opposition groups called on the National Assembly to review provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, which they believe could undermine the integrity of elections. They also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider timelines for party primaries, requesting an extension of the deadline to the end of July 2026.

The communiqué further raised concerns about the neutrality of the electoral body, urging stakeholders to ensure that electoral processes remain transparent, credible, and inclusive.

In addition, the parties called for adherence to the rule of law, including the protection of political rights and due process for individuals involved in political activities.

The summit commended Nigerians for their resilience and participation in democratic processes, while also appreciating the Oyo State Government and residents for hosting the gathering.

The communiqué was endorsed by chairmen of participating opposition parties.
