SANWO-OLU BACKS HAMZAT AS SUCCESSOR, SIGNALS EARLY 2027 LAGOS GOVERNORSHIP RACE

LAGOS, NIGERIA — Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has publicly endorsed his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election, marking a significant early development in the state’s political landscape.

The endorsement was announced on Monday following a closed-door meeting held at the Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the governorship seat. The meeting brought together members of the State Executive Council, key leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and influential stakeholders within the state.

Among those in attendance were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and former lawmaker, Ganiyu Solomon, among others.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the decision as a collective and unanimous agreement among party leaders present. He emphasized Hamzat’s preparedness and deep understanding of governance in Lagos State.

According to the governor, Hamzat possesses the experience and competence required to lead the state, citing his close working relationship with the deputy governor over the past seven years.

Sanwo-Olu said Hamzat has demonstrated “integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support” throughout their time in office, qualities he noted are critical for leadership continuity in the state.

He further described Hamzat as a capable administrator who is well-acquainted with the workings of government, adding that the deputy governor has been effectively groomed for higher responsibility.

The governor also acknowledged the role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in shaping the leadership trajectory in Lagos State, noting that both he and Hamzat benefited from the President’s political mentorship.

The meeting, described as consultative, underscored what the governor called a “family-driven consensus,” suggesting broad internal alignment within the APC in Lagos.

Political observers say the endorsement signals an early consolidation of support within the ruling party as preparations gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While the APC is yet to formally commence its primary process, the development is expected to influence political calculations within the party and potentially shape the direction of the governorship race in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
