FEDERAL HIGH COURT OPENS WEEKEND REGISTRIES FOR 2027 PRE-ELECTION CASES
The Federal High Court of Nigeria has announced that its registries across all judicial divisions will now operate on weekends and public holidays specifically for the filing of pre-election matters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The directive was contained in an official statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Chief Registrar of the court, Yahaya Shafa.
According to the statement, the measure became necessary due to the constitutional and statutory timelines guiding the filing and determination of pre-election cases in Nigeria.
The court stated that legal practitioners would be able to access court registries between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on weekends and public holidays for matters strictly related to pre-election disputes.
The statement read:
“The Federal High Court of Nigeria formally notifies all legal practitioners that Registries in all Divisions of the Federal High Court would be open between 10:00am and 2:00pm Weekends and Public Holidays for Filing of Pre-Election Matters Only.
This has become expedient to meet up with the limited time frame for filing Pre-election matters.”
Political activities across the country have intensified in recent weeks as political parties continue preparations for the 2027 elections.
Several parties have already conducted primaries for governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly positions, leading to an expected rise in election-related litigations and disputes.
Legal analysts say the decision by the Federal High Court is aimed at ensuring that pre-election matters are handled within the time limits prescribed by law, while also preventing delays in the judicial process as political activities gather momentum nationwide.
