ADC FACTION DECLARES DUMEBI KACHIKWU AS 2027 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) loyal to former presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, has announced him as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The declaration was made during the faction’s national convention held in Abuja on Sunday, where members also dissolved the National Working Committee previously led by former Senate President David Mark.

Delegates from several states attended the gathering, which produced a new leadership structure for the faction amid the party’s ongoing internal crisis.

At the convention, Abdulkadir Bashir emerged as the faction’s national chairman, while Johnny Derek was named deputy national chairman.

Other officials announced include Kennedy Odion as national secretary, Joe Aro as treasurer, Chris Ugwu as publicity secretary, Elias Adikwu as national organising secretary, and Patrick Ambut as national chief whip.

The faction also appointed Adamu Sahad as deputy national chairman in charge of ethics, while Kingsley Oggah was named chairman of the Board of Trustees.

The ADC has remained divided into multiple factions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with rival groups linked to David Mark, Nafiu Bala, and Dumebi Kachikwu all laying claim to the party’s leadership.

The leadership dispute has already reached the courts, with the different camps seeking legal recognition.

In April, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) suspended recognition of the party’s leadership due to pending court cases and an Appeal Court directive instructing all factions to maintain the status quo pending determination by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

However, INEC later updated its records on April 30, recognising the faction led by David Mark. Former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, currently serves as secretary of that faction.

During the Abuja convention, Delta State ADC Chairman, Austin Okolie, moved a motion for the adoption of the new National Working Committee, which was seconded by Jigawa State Chairman, Kabiru Hussaini, before delegates approved it through a voice vote.

Following the swearing-in of the new executives, Elias Adikwu officially announced Dumebi Kachikwu as the faction’s consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Kachikwu previously contested the 2023 presidential election under the platform of the ADC.

Political observers say the latest development could deepen the internal crisis within the party as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 polls.
