NUT DECLARES INDEFINITE STRIKE IN OYO
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike in Oyo State following the continued abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The union directed all primary and secondary school teachers across Oyo State to withdraw their services beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, pending the safe release of all victims.
The directive was contained in a joint statement issued by the NUT National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, and the Secretary General, Dr. Clinton J. Ikpitibo.
According to the union, the decision became necessary due to the prolonged captivity of the victims, who were reportedly abducted on May 15, 2026, and the lack of significant progress in rescue efforts despite repeated appeals to authorities and security agencies.
The strike action is expected to affect academic activities across public primary and secondary schools in the state until further notice.
The NUT also announced plans for nationwide solidarity rallies scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The rallies are expected to take place in various states across the country, with participants marching to their respective Government Houses to demand improved security in schools and safer learning environments.
The union said the protests would also provide an opportunity to address the media and draw national attention to the growing insecurity affecting educational institutions.
Concerns have continued to rise following reports that some victims may have died while in captivity. Emotional appeals allegedly recorded from the kidnappers’ hideout have also surfaced online, showing an abducted school principal and a teacher pleading with the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, the NUT, the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), and Nigerians to intervene.
The teachers’ union described the situation as deeply troubling, stressing that schools, educators, and students should never become targets for criminal activities.
The NUT further reaffirmed its support for the affected families and urged security agencies to intensify rescue operations and intelligence gathering to ensure the victims are freed safely.
The union emphasized that quality education cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity, adding that it would continue to pursue all lawful means until the abducted teachers and students regain their freedom.
