ONDO GOVT ORDERS TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF SELECTED SCHOOLS AHEAD OF STATE ASSEMBLY ELECTION
The Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has announced the temporary closure of selected public primary and secondary schools across the state ahead of the Ondo State House of Assembly election scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the affected schools are those designated as polling centres for the election across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.
The Ministry directed learners, teachers, and other staff members in the affected schools to remain at home on election day as part of measures to ensure the safety of lives and property and to support a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
The statement noted that heads of the affected schools would be contacted directly to ensure full compliance with the directive, while officials from Zonal and Area Education Offices would also monitor and support enforcement within the affected local government areas.
The Ministry further assured parents and guardians that adequate arrangements would be made to ensure that candidates participating in the ongoing WAEC Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC-SSCE) are not disrupted by the temporary closure.
It added that special attention would be given to the safety and welfare of students in boarding schools during the election period.
School administrators were also instructed to cooperate with election officials by granting access to school premises and providing necessary facilities required for the conduct of the election.
The Ministry clarified that the directive applies only to schools selected as polling centres, while schools not affected by the electoral arrangement are expected to continue normal academic activities without interruption.
Normal academic activities in the affected schools are expected to resume on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
The Ministry urged school heads to ensure the information is widely circulated among staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders within their communities.
Officials also appreciated residents and education stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment across Ondo State.
