TRUMP ORDERS EXPANDED U.S.-NIGERIA MILITARY OPERATIONS AGAINST ISIS-LINKED TERRORISTS

The United States government has reportedly intensified military operations against ISIS-linked terrorist groups operating in Nigeria following a directive issued by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The development was disclosed by U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth during a press briefing at the White House, where he stated that the renewed operations are aimed at strengthening efforts to combat terrorism and protect vulnerable communities affected by violent attacks in parts of Nigeria.

According to Hegseth, American military personnel are currently working in collaboration with Nigerian security forces in coordinated counterterrorism operations across affected regions.

He revealed that one of the recent joint operations led to the killing of Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, an ISIS commander allegedly linked to several attacks and extremist activities in Nigeria’s North-East region.

Reports indicated that Al-Minuki, said to be from Borno State, was neutralised earlier in May during a coordinated operation involving U.S. and Nigerian forces.

The commander had previously been designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by U.S. authorities in 2023 over alleged involvement in extremist activities connected to ISIS networks operating within West Africa.

The latest operation is also said to be part of wider counterterrorism measures following earlier U.S. military actions targeting terrorist cells in Sokoto State in late 2025.

The renewed security cooperation comes amid growing concerns over insecurity, insurgency and recurring attacks in several parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North-East and North-West where armed groups continue to pose security threats.

Security experts believe the strengthened collaboration between the United States and Nigeria could improve intelligence sharing, surveillance capabilities and joint military responses aimed at dismantling terrorist networks operating within the Lake Chad Basin and surrounding regions.

The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official detailed statement regarding the latest operation as of the time of filing this report.
