TWO KILLED IN IMO EXPLOSION AS POLICE BEGIN INVESTIGATION INTO INCIDENT

The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation following an explosion in Owerri that claimed the lives of two individuals identified as suspected scrap metal scavengers.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday evening inside a large drainage channel located along Old Nekede Road opposite Lakeside Hotel in Owerri West Local Government Area, triggering an immediate security response from law enforcement authorities.

Confirming the development, spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, said police operatives were quickly deployed to the scene after receiving reports of the explosion.

According to the police, officers immediately secured the area while the command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit conducted a full safety sweep to determine the nature of the explosion and prevent any additional danger to residents.

Authorities later declared the area safe after completing preliminary emergency operations.

Police identified the deceased victims as Hyginus Akalonu, 32, from Umulumu in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, and Victor Egwu, 22, from Agba in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that both men were inside the drainage channel at the time of the explosion and are believed to have been involved in scrap metal scavenging activities.

The explosion reportedly caused severe burn injuries to both victims.

Emergency responders rushed them to the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Owerri, where medical personnel later confirmed both individuals dead while receiving treatment.

The police command said its Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit has commenced a full-scale investigation to establish the exact cause of the explosion and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities stated that additional updates will be provided as investigations progress.

Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso urged members of the public to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious objects, abandoned materials, or unusual activities within their communities.

He also encouraged residents to use emergency communication channels or report directly to the nearest police station whenever potential security threats are noticed.

Security experts say the incident highlights the dangers associated with unauthorized scrap metal scavenging, particularly when individuals unknowingly handle hazardous materials or unexploded devices.

The ongoing police investigation is expected to provide more clarity regarding the exact material involved in the fatal explosion.
