ONDO GOVERNMENT EXPANDS FREE MEDICAL OUTREACH FOR ELDERLY IN ILE-OLUJI COMMUNITY
The Ondo State Government has extended its ongoing free healthcare initiative for elderly citizens under the O’Datiwa Medical Outreach Programme, bringing medical services and welfare support directly to senior citizens in Ile-Oluji Kingdom as part of efforts to improve access to healthcare for vulnerable residents across the state.
The initiative, coordinated by the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, is part of the administration’s broader social welfare agenda targeted at supporting elderly citizens and vulnerable groups across the state’s 18 local government areas.
Speaking during the outreach programme held at the palace hall of the Jegun of Ile-Oluji, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration to ensuring improved healthcare access and better living conditions for elderly residents in underserved communities.
Dr Osamaye explained that the programme was specifically designed to reach elderly individuals who may not have the financial means or physical ability to access hospitals regularly, allowing them to receive direct medical attention at no cost within their communities.
According to her, medical professionals were deployed to conduct health screenings, carry out medical tests, provide medications, and offer immediate treatment for participants during the exercise.
She added that beneficiaries would also be enrolled in a free health insurance scheme, ensuring continued access to healthcare services beyond the outreach programme itself.
“We have brought medical personnel to check them, conduct tests, and provide medications. There will also be a free insurance scheme for them so that even after this outreach, those requiring further medical intervention can continue receiving care,” she said.
The commissioner further disclosed that the state government has introduced a financial support initiative known as “Owo Arugbo,” a stipend package designed to help elderly citizens meet immediate personal needs.
According to her, the programme reflects promises made by the current administration during the election campaign and demonstrates the government’s commitment to translating campaign promises into practical governance.
“During our campaign, we made promises that governance would not be limited to manifestos alone but would become a practical experience for the people. Today is another example of fulfilling that promise,” she stated.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Kolawole Kayode, also commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for approving the programme, noting that it would significantly improve access to healthcare services for elderly citizens and vulnerable groups across the state.
Speaking at the event, Professor Bridget Awosika disclosed that the outreach programme has already been extended to more than seven local government areas and will gradually cover all remaining parts of Ondo State.
She encouraged participants to prioritize their health by getting adequate rest and taking advantage of regular medical check-ups now being made available through the programme.
The Jegun of Ile-Oluji Kingdom, Oba Dr Julius Oluwole Olufaderin Adetimehin (Jimoko II), expressed appreciation to Governor Aiyedatiwa for extending the initiative to his community, describing the outreach as a valuable intervention that would positively impact many elderly residents.
He also commended the Commissioner, healthcare personnel, and officials from Orange Health Insurance Scheme (ORANGHIS) for their support and dedication to the programme.
Medical personnel from ORANGHIS, led by Mrs Precious Akinwumi, conducted health tests, diagnoses, and distributed medications to elderly beneficiaries during the exercise.
The outreach programme forms part of the Ondo State Government’s broader healthcare and social welfare initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of vulnerable populations while strengthening community-based healthcare delivery across the state.
