NIGERIA’S GREATNESS DEPENDS ON LEADERS WHO LEAD BY EXAMPLE — LEGAL PRACTITIONER WRITES
A Nigerian legal practitioner and public affairs commentator, Akinbobola Akin Esq., popularly known as Omo Luji of Oijefon, has emphasized that Nigeria can only achieve genuine national development when political leaders begin to demonstrate leadership through personal sacrifice, accountability, and actions that inspire public confidence.
In a public commentary titled “Leadership by Example: The Only Path to Nigeria’s Greatness,” Akinbobola argued that effective leadership goes beyond speeches and public declarations, stressing that true leadership requires those in power to personally demonstrate the sacrifices they expect from citizens.
According to him, one of the biggest obstacles to national progress remains the high cost of governance, with public office holders continuing to enjoy enormous salaries, allowances, and luxuries funded by public resources while ordinary Nigerians struggle under difficult economic realities.
He noted that reducing excessive government spending has become critical if leaders expect citizens to embrace economic reforms and temporary hardship aimed at stabilizing the nation’s economy.
The legal practitioner specifically pointed to concerns surrounding extravagant spending among political office holders, particularly lawmakers, who continue to maintain lifestyles that appear disconnected from the economic realities faced by many Nigerians.
He argued that it becomes increasingly difficult for citizens to accept calls for sacrifice when those responsible for implementing policies continue to enjoy privileges insulated from the effects of those same policies.
Akinbobola also raised concerns about the continued use of expensive imported vehicles by government officials, noting that such practices contradict efforts to promote local industries and strengthen confidence in Nigerian-made products.
According to him, if public officials truly believe in the growth potential of local industries, they should set the example by patronizing products manufactured within Nigeria and encouraging wider public adoption.
He stressed that leadership by example remains one of the strongest foundations of good governance, adding that citizens are more likely to support difficult government policies when they observe leaders making similar sacrifices.
The legal practitioner further noted that trust between citizens and government can only be strengthened through accountability, transparency, integrity, and a genuine commitment to shared responsibility.
He warned that no society can successfully ask its citizens to embrace austerity measures while policy makers themselves remain shielded from the economic consequences of the decisions they implement.
Despite the challenges facing the country, Akinbobola expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, stating that the nation possesses the human capital and natural resources required to emerge as one of the world’s leading countries.
He expressed hope that Nigerian leaders would increasingly embrace principles of selfless service and prioritize national interest above personal comfort.
According to him, Nigeria’s long-term greatness will largely depend on whether those entrusted with leadership positions are willing to demonstrate through action the same sacrifices they expect from citizens.
The commentary adds to ongoing national conversations around governance reforms, public accountability, and the need for leadership practices that strengthen trust between government institutions and the people.
