COURT ORDERS EFCC TO APOLOGISE, PAY FORMER MINISTER OLU AGUNLOYE N10 MILLION OVER DEFAMATORY PUBLICATION
A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to pay former Minister of Power, Dr. Olu Agunloye, the sum of N10 million in damages for defamation arising from a publication on the agency's official website and social media platforms.
The judgment, delivered by Justice Peter Kekemeke, held that the publication was defamatory and directed the EFCC to immediately retract it.
The court also ordered the anti-graft agency to publish a public apology to Agunloye on its official website and in two national newspapers. In addition, the EFCC was restrained from making further defamatory statements against the former minister.
The disputed publication reportedly linked Agunloye to an alleged $6 billion fraud, a claim that formed the basis of the defamation suit.
The court's decision represents a significant legal development in the case involving the former minister and the anti-corruption agency.
