APC INSISTS CANDIDATE SUBSTITUTIONS FOLLOWED DUE PROCESS, DISMISSES ELECTORAL LAW BREACH CLAIMS
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended its decision to substitute some candidates after the party's primary elections, maintaining that the process complied with its internal guidelines and did not violate the Electoral Act.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed allegations that the party arbitrarily replaced candidates or awarded tickets to individuals who did not participate in the primaries.
According to Morka, the party received more than 720 petitions from aspirants dissatisfied with the outcome of the primaries. He explained that the petitions were reviewed by the party's appeal committees before recommendations were forwarded to the National Working Committee (NWC) for further consideration.
He stated that after reviewing the appeal committee reports, the NWC made adjustments where necessary, insisting that the final decisions reflected legitimate outcomes of the party's primary election process.
Morka argued that party primaries are not limited to voting alone but include an appeal process designed to address complaints and correct any irregularities.
He also rejected claims that the APC handed tickets to individuals who neither purchased nomination forms nor participated in the primaries, saying he was unaware of any such case and challenged critics to provide specific examples for investigation.
The APC spokesman acknowledged that some aspirants remained dissatisfied but said the party took time to thoroughly review every petition before reaching its final decisions.
He added that the party had begun engaging aggrieved aspirants to reassure them that the review process was transparent, fair, and not intended to favour any individual.
Morka further dismissed allegations that the review exercise was manipulated for political interests, stressing that internal mechanisms exist to resolve disputes that may arise during primary elections.
Commenting on the party's preparedness for the 2027 general elections, he expressed confidence in the APC's electoral strength, noting that the ruling party had recorded victories in elections conducted since the 2023 general elections, including recent by-elections.
He maintained that the APC remains focused on winning future elections and rejected suggestions that the party was worried about its electoral prospects.
