2027 Bombshell: Kwankwaso Demands Presidential or VP Ticket to Defect
– 'Says No Lesser Role Will Do'
Kano, January 4, 2026
In a bold declaration that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria's political arena, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and head of the influential Kwankwasiyya movement, has stated he will only consider leaving his party ahead of the 2027 general elections if offered the presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
Speaking to a gathering of loyal NNPP supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano on Saturday, Kwankwaso emphasized that after decades of building a nationwide political base, any move to another party must position him at the pinnacle of the ticket. "I am always ready to listen to any political party, but my supporters across the country will only allow me to consider a presidential or vice-presidential ticket," he declared in Hausa.
He revealed that negotiations with potential coalition partners had stalled because offers were limited to ministerial appointments or other secondary roles – proposals he deemed insufficient.
"We told them that we agree to go with you, but what will you give me? Appointments? How many? Which one among them will fit me, which I will accept?" Kwankwaso said, highlighting the value of his movement's national chairman and executives.
The statement comes amid intense speculation about opposition mergers to challenge President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027. With Peter Obi recently defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and figures like Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi also eyeing the space, Kwankwaso's conditions could complicate efforts to unify the fragmented opposition.
Kwankwaso, who finished fourth in the 2023 presidential race on the NNPP platform with strong support in Kano, also sharply criticized rumors that his political protégé, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Labeling it a potential "betrayal," he expressed shock that Yusuf had not consulted him and urged unity in Kano to bolster NNPP's chances in future polls.
"If they insist, I believe the governor should resign his position before defecting. That mandate belongs to all of us and the people, not just an individual," Kwankwaso warned.
