AIYEDATIWA SETS REFORM AGENDA AS APC SOUTH-WEST HOLDS CRUCIAL CONSTITUTIONAL HEARING IN AKURE

Akure, Ondo State — January 27, 2026

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday led the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-West Zonal Public Hearing on constitutional amendments, calling for inclusive reforms, strengthened internal democracy, and merit-based leadership within the ruling party.

Speaking at the Government House Banquet Hall, Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the hearing as a landmark democratic exercise with long-term institutional significance for the APC, stressing that political parties endure not merely by electoral victories but by building strong, transparent internal systems.[10:56 PM, 1/19/2026] Opima: [1:15 AM, 1/20/2026] Opima:

“This is not a routine political engagement,” the Governor said. “It is a solemn democratic responsibility that reflects our party’s ideological confidence, organisational maturity, and reformist resolve.”

He described the party’s constitution as more than a procedural document, calling it the ethical anchor and governing philosophy that legitimises and restrains power. According to him, internal democracy is not optional for the APC but fundamental to its survival and credibility.

Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the APC National Executive Committee for setting up the Constitution Amendment Committee under the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the move as one rooted in foresight, statesmanship, and democratic values.

He applauded the broad consultative approach adopted by the committee, which has involved civil society organisations, democracy-support institutions, women and youth groups, persons living with disabilities, legislators, party administrators, and grassroots members across the country.

“A constitution that excludes voices ultimately weakens the institution it seeks to guide,” he warned.

Highlighting the significance of hosting the South-West session in Akure, the Governor described the region as the “intellectual engine room of progressive politics in Nigeria,” citing Ondo State’s historic commitment to free education, social welfare, transparency, and people-centred governance.[10:56 PM, 1/19/2026] Opima: [1:15 AM, 1/20/2026] Opima:

He urged delegates to rise above narrow interests and short-term political calculations, stressing that the APC’s future must be anchored on clear rules, credible processes, and leadership that emerges through merit, service, and integrity.

“The APC of the future must remain a party where participation is guaranteed and unity is strengthened,” he said.

In his remarks, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Femi Hazmat, described the South-West as a traditional bastion of progressive politics, urging delegates to view constitutional reforms as tools for strengthening internal cohesion, equitable representation, and democratic credibility.

He emphasised the need for active participation at all levels of party decision-making to enhance accountability and responsiveness.

Earlier, Ondo State APC Caretaker Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, welcomed delegates and highlighted the party’s growing membership, citing the recent defection of former Deputy Governor Hon. Agboola Ajayi. He expressed confidence that the APC would significantly increase its electoral performance in the 2027 general elections.

Delivering the keynote address, Miriam Odinaka Onuoha, a member of the Constitution Amendment Committee representing the South-East, said the committee was inaugurated on February 26, 2025, to align the party’s constitution with its expanding membership and evolving political realities.[10:56 PM, 1/19/2026] Opima: [1:15 AM, 1/20/2026] Opima:

She emphasised inclusivity, pointing to Article 7 of the constitution, which provides for affirmative action for women, youth, and persons with disabilities, adding that loyalty and service must be recognised and rewarded.

In his vote of thanks, APC National Vice-Chairman (South-West), Dr. Isaac Kekemeke, called for active participation in the ongoing e-registration exercise and stressed the need to harmonise multiple versions of the APC constitution to eliminate operational confusion within the party’s leadership.

He also urged delegates to deliberate seriously on party membership, financing, candidate selection, and mechanisms for protecting the interests of women, youths, and special groups.

Dignitaries at the event included Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, Secretary to the State Government Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, Chief of Staff Prince Segun Omojuwa, members of the State Executive Council, and lawmakers of the Ondo State House of Assembly.
