ALAAFIN FACES UNCERTAIN FUTURE AS OYO LAWMAKERS RECEIVE MULTIPLE PETITIONS

The Oyo State House of Assembly has confirmed the receipt of six separate petitions calling for the removal of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, over allegations relating to the conduct of his office.

Sources within the Assembly disclosed that the petitions were formally submitted and have been referred to the appropriate legislative committees for preliminary review in line with the Assembly’s procedures.

While details of the petitions were not fully disclosed, it was gathered that the complaints border on alleged breaches of traditional protocols and administrative concerns within the Oyo traditional institution. The petitioners reportedly urged the lawmakers to intervene in the interest of peace, order, and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the ancient Oyo Kingdom.

A senior lawmaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Assembly would follow due process and ensure that all parties involved are given a fair hearing before any decision is taken.

“The House will not rush into conclusions. The petitions will be examined in accordance with the law and the relevant chieftaincy declarations,” the source said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government and the palace of the Alaafin had yet to issue official statements on the matter.

The Alaafin of Oyo is one of the most revered traditional rulers in Yorubaland, and any move relating to the throne often attracts significant public and political attention.

Observers note that the development could heighten political and traditional sensitivities in the state as the legislative process unfolds.
