ALLEGED FORGERY: LATEEF FAGBEMI TAKES OVER OZEKHOME’S TRIAL
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has formally assumed control of the criminal case against senior lawyer Mike Ozekhome (SAN), which was initially brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The development disrupted Ozekhome’s scheduled arraignment before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on a three-count charge, including allegations of forgery.
At the proceedings, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), representing the AGF, informed the court that the AGF had decided to take over the case from the ICPC, acting under the powers conferred by Section 174 of the Constitution.
Counsel for the ICPC, Osuebeni Akpomisingha, raised no objection to the AGF’s takeover. Similarly, former AGF Kanu Agabi (SAN), leading a formidable defence team of 15 Senior Advocates of Nigeria, also did not contest the move.
Following an application for adjournment by Oyedepo, which was unopposed by Agabi, Justice Peter Kekemeke adjourned the matter to February 24 for the arraignment.
