ANTI-GRAFT WAR HITS ONDO AS EFCC SUMMONS LG CHAIRMAN

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday stormed Akure, the Ondo State capital, to serve a summons on a local government chairman over allegations of financial misappropriation.

Sources confirmed that the EFCC invited the Akure Local Government Chairman, Hon. Dr. Gbenga Fasua, who is also the Ondo State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the local government level.

The anti-graft agency was said to be probing issues bordering on management of council funds, contract awards and revenue administration, although details of the alleged infractions and the exact sums involved were not disclosed as of the time of filing this report.

Witnesses said EFCC operatives arrived in Akure earlier in the day and formally delivered the invitation to the council boss, directing him to appear before the commission for questioning.

As of press time, it remained unclear whether the ALGON chairman had honoured the summons or when he is expected to report to the commission. The EFCC has also not issued an official statement on the matter.

The development comes amid increased scrutiny of local government finances in Ondo State, with growing public calls for accountability and transparency in the administration of grassroots funds.

Efforts to reach officials of the Ondo State Government and the EFCC for comments were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
