BREAKING: COURT NULLIFIES PDP FACTIONAL NATIONAL CONVENTION
COURT NULLIFIES PDP FACTIONAL NATIONAL CONVENTION, BARS LEADERS FROM ACTING AS PARTY OFFICERS
A Federal High Court has declared invalid the factional national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, Oyo State, effectively nullifying all decisions and outcomes arising from the gathering.
In its ruling, the court held that the convention did not meet the constitutional and procedural requirements of the party, rendering it unlawful. As a result, individuals elected or appointed during the convention are barred from parading themselves or acting as national officers of the party.
The judgment further restrained the factional leadership involved from performing any official duties or taking actions on behalf of the PDP at the national level, pending compliance with the party’s constitution and due process.
The court’s decision is seen as a significant development in the ongoing internal crisis within the PDP, which has been grappling with leadership disputes and factional divisions across several states and at the national level.
Legal analysts note that the ruling reinforces the authority of party constitutions and internal regulations, emphasizing that political parties must adhere strictly to their established rules when conducting conventions and electing officers.
As of the time of filing this report, the PDP has not issued an official statement responding to the judgment. It remains unclear whether the affected faction will appeal the ruling.
