POLICE FLOOD ONITSHA MARKET WITH HEAVY SECURITY TO ENFORCE CLOSURE, MAINTAIN ORDER
Heavy security presence has been deployed across Onitsha major markets as law enforcement agencies moved to enforce the temporary market closure ordered by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, following traders’ compliance with the sit-at-home directive.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that officers were stationed at strategic locations within and around the markets to ensure strict compliance with the government directive and to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
According to police authorities, the security deployment is not punitive but aimed at maintaining peace, safeguarding lives and property, and ensuring that the closure is carried out without incident.
The market shutdown followed reports that a large number of traders observed the sit-at-home, prompting the state government to order a temporary closure as part of measures to restore normalcy and reinforce public order.
A police spokesperson noted that operatives would remain on ground throughout the period of the closure, warning individuals against attempting to defy the directive or engage in activities capable of disrupting public peace.
“Our officers are present to ensure calm, compliance, and protection of both traders and residents. We urge the public to cooperate with security agencies,” the police said.
Residents and traders were advised to remain calm and avoid unnecessary movement within the affected areas, while assuring that security agencies are working closely with the state government to prevent any security breaches.
The Anambra State Government has reiterated its commitment to restoring full commercial activities once the situation stabilises, urging residents to support lawful efforts aimed at sustaining peace and economic stability in the state.
