RIVERS GOVT FIRES BACK AT WIKE CAMP, SAYS PRO-TINUBU RALLY VENUE UNSAFE
The Rivers State Government has denied allegations that it blocked a pro-President Bola Tinubu rally reportedly linked to former Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, stating that the decision was based on safety concerns at the proposed venue.
The state government explained that the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt is currently undergoing reconstruction and is therefore unsafe for public use.
In a statement issued by the state authorities, officials said the refusal to grant approval for the rally was not politically motivated but was strictly due to ongoing construction work at the stadium, which poses risks to public safety.
“The stadium is presently under reconstruction, and allowing a large gathering at the facility would endanger lives,” the government said, adding that safety considerations must take precedence over political activities.
The clarification follows claims by allies of Wike that the state government deliberately denied access to the stadium to frustrate a rally in support of President Tinubu. The government, however, insisted that it has no policy of restricting lawful political gatherings and remains committed to democratic freedoms.
As of the time of filing this report, organisers of the rally had yet to confirm whether an alternative venue would be selected.
The development adds to the growing political tension in Rivers State, where disagreements between key political actors have continued to shape public discourse in recent weeks.
