TENSION IN IJEBULAND AS OGUN GOVT SUSPENDS AWUJALE SELECTION

The Ogun State Government has ordered an immediate halt to all processes connected to the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland, pending further clarification and adherence to due process.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the state government directed relevant traditional councils, kingmakers and stakeholders involved in the process to suspend all actions relating to the succession, citing the need to ensure compliance with existing laws and customary procedures governing the installation of traditional rulers in the state.

The government explained that the decision was taken to prevent possible disputes, legal complications and breakdown of order, stressing that the selection of a paramount ruler such as the Awujale must strictly follow established legal and traditional frameworks.

It added that the state remains committed to preserving the peace, unity and cultural heritage of Ijebuland, while ensuring that any succession process is transparent, inclusive and lawful.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has been mandated to engage relevant stakeholders and provide guidance on the appropriate next steps in line with Ogun State’s chieftaincy laws.

The government urged residents and interested parties to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that no action would be taken that undermines tradition or the rule of law.

The Awujale stool is one of the most revered traditional institutions in Yorubaland, commanding deep historical, cultural and social significance in Ogun State and beyond.
