EFCC Reacts to Bala Mohammed’s Allegation of Political Persecution
Stay Informed, Stay Real!
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed allegations by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, that it is being used to persecute him politically.
The anti-graft agency described the claims as “wild” and “far-fetched,” insisting that its investigations are driven strictly by evidence and not politics.
The EFCC’s reaction followed comments by the governor after the arraignment of Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, and three others before a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The defendants were charged with money laundering and terrorism financing involving about $9.7 million, alleged to be public funds.
Governor Mohammed, whose name appeared in the charge sheet as the approving authority, accused the Federal Government and the EFCC of targeting him and his aides in a bid to force him to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He also alleged that the probe was orchestrated by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over political disagreements.
However, reacting in a statement on Thursday, EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale said the commission viewed the allegations with great displeasure.
Oyewale said no political office holder had the power to influence the EFCC’s operations, stressing that the agency remains independent and non-partisan.
He urged members of the public to study the court charges and determine whether they were based on facts or personal vendetta.
The EFCC also accused some politicians of hypocrisy, noting that claims of persecution often arise when opposition figures are investigated, while similar cases involving ruling party members attract silence.
The commission further referenced Governor Mohammed’s 2016 money laundering case, which was suspended after he assumed office and gained constitutional immunity, asking who influenced that investigation at the time.
“The governor should concentrate on the governance of Bauchi State and allow the EFCC to continue cleaning the financial space of the nation,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Wike has denied any involvement in the matter, telling the Bauchi governor to clear his name with the EFCC if he has nothing to hide.
