EX-ATTORNEY GENERAL ABUBAKAR MALAMI RETURNED TO DSS CUSTODY AFTER LEAVING KUJE PRISON

Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has been rearrested by security operatives shortly after his release from the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, in a dramatic turn in his ongoing legal ordeal.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) took Malami into custody on Monday as he exited the prison facility, following the completion of bail procedures previously granted by a Federal High Court in Abuja in relation to a money laundering case involving approximately ₦8.7 billion.

A video circulating on social media showed the former AGF approaching a vehicle believed to belong to the DSS, during which he asked officers to identify themselves before being escorted into the vehicle.

Sources familiar with the matter told reporters that the rearrest was connected to fresh investigations into allegations of terrorism financing and the discovery of arms at Malami’s country home in Birnin-Kebbi last December.

Malami, his son Abdulaziz, and his wife Hajia Bashir Asabe were arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on a 16-count charge of money laundering and related offences. The court granted them bail in early January, ordering each to provide ₦500 million bail with two sureties each.

However, despite fulfilling the bail conditions, Malami’s freedom was short-lived, as the DSS reportedly maintained surveillance around the correctional centre with the intention of reapprehending him once he left the facility.

Security sources indicated that multiple petitions alleging terrorism-related offences were filed against Malami, prompting the fresh action by the DSS. While no official statement has been issued by the agency detailing the precise grounds for the arrest, the operation reflects heightened scrutiny by Nigerian security agencies over the former chief law officer’s activities.

Malami’s legal team is yet to release a formal response to the latest development.
