A fatal crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State on December 29, 2025, involved heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua as a passenger in a Lexus SUV.

The vehicle collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of two close associates: Latif “Latz” Ayodele (also known as Kevin Latif Ayodele), Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.

Joshua sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized before being discharged on December 31, 2025. He is recovering at home and, with his family, paid respects to the deceased as their bodies were prepared for repatriation.

In a development highlighted in court proceedings, investigators disclosed a seat swap that appears to have altered the crash’s impact.

According to accounts presented to authorities, Joshua initially sat in the front passenger seat but moved to the back seat behind the driver at the driver’s request, after the driver cited Joshua’s size obstructing the view of the wing mirror.

Ayodele then occupied the front passenger seat, which investigators say was the more severely affected area in the collision.

Officials have described Joshua’s survival as a near-miraculous turn of events.

The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, who has been part of Joshua’s team for roughly three years, has been charged with four offenses: Causing death by dangerous driving; reckless and negligent driving; driving without due care and attention; and driving without a valid driver’s license.

Kayode has pleaded not guilty, contending the crash resulted from brake failure. He was granted bail but has remained in custody until the bail conditions are met. The trial is scheduled to begin on January 20, 2026, at Sagamu Magistrate Court.
