ONDO POLICE PROBE ODIGBO MATERNAL FATALITY, CRACK DOWN ON QUACK MEDICAL FACILITIES
The Ondo State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the operation of an alleged illegal medical facility in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, following the reported death of a 28-year-old woman after a childbirth procedure.
According to the Command, a report was received on January 18, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m. from a concerned resident of the Sabo Area of Odigbo, alleging that Kehinde Olawuyi (36) and his wife, Eniola Olawuyi, were operating an unlicensed medical clinic at Orita Odigbo.
Preliminary findings revealed that the suspects allegedly admitted Iyanu, a 28-year-old pregnant woman, on January 4, 2026, at about 12:00 noon, for delivery at the illegal facility. During the process, the victim was reportedly subjected to unprofessional medical handling, resulting in severe bleeding and loss of consciousness.
The victim was immediately rushed to another medical facility in Odigbo for emergency treatment. Sadly, despite medical intervention, she was later confirmed dead.
Further investigations by the Police revealed that the suspects are not registered medical practitioners, confirming that the clinic was operating illegally. The case remains under active investigation and will be charged to court upon its conclusion.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, psc(+), mnips, reiterated the Command’s resolve to rid Ondo State of illegal medical practices that endanger lives. He also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, for his strategic leadership and continuous reforms aimed at strengthening public safety and tackling medical-related crimes.
The Ondo State Police Command has warned members of the public against patronising unregistered and illegal medical facilities, urging residents to always seek healthcare services from licensed and certified health institutions.
The Command further appeals to members of the public with credible and actionable information that may assist in the arrest of the suspects to report to the nearest Police Station. All information provided will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
