INTERIOR MINISTER PAYS UNSCHEDULED VISIT TO ABUJA IMMIGRATION OFFICE
Orders Improved Service Delivery
Abuja, Nigeria — The Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has paid an unscheduled visit to a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) passport office in Abuja as part of ongoing efforts to assess service delivery and address public complaints over passport processing delays.
The surprise inspection, which took place early in the day, saw the minister arrive unannounced at the facility, where he observed operations across various service points, including biometric enrolment and passport collection sections.
During the visit, the minister interacted directly with passport applicants and immigration officials to gain first-hand insight into the challenges affecting service efficiency. He expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of work, particularly the number of applicants attended to several hours after official opening time.
Tunji-Ojo stressed that delays in passport processing were unacceptable, noting that Nigerians deserve timely and efficient service after completing all required payments through official channels. He cautioned immigration personnel against imposing or encouraging any form of unofficial charges on applicants.
The minister also queried operational procedures, directing officers to adopt more coordinated and simultaneous processing methods to reduce waiting time and eliminate bottlenecks. He emphasized that public service must be driven by professionalism, accountability, and respect for citizens’ time.
According to him, the ministry will not tolerate inefficiency or practices that undermine public trust in government institutions. He reiterated the federal government’s commitment to ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Immigration Service aimed at improving transparency and service delivery nationwide.
The unannounced visit is part of broader monitoring measures being implemented by the Ministry of Interior to ensure compliance with service standards and to enhance the overall experience of Nigerians accessing passport services.
