DRAMA IN ABUJA AS FCTA WORKERS MOVE TO INTERCEPT WIKE’S CONVOY
There was tension today at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Secretariat in Abuja as striking workers intensified their protest, disrupting official activities and forcing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to leave the premises under tight security.
Members of the Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) reportedly moved to intercept the minister’s convoy as he exited the secretariat through the back gate, following growing unrest within the complex.
Eyewitnesses said the protesting workers, who are currently on strike over unresolved labour and welfare-related demands, converged around key areas of the secretariat, chanting slogans and calling for immediate government action.
Security operatives were said to have acted swiftly, forming a protective cordon around the minister’s convoy and ensuring his safe departure from the premises in order to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order.
The protest led to a temporary disruption of activities at the FCTA Secretariat, with staff movement restricted as a precautionary measure.
As of the time of filing this report, the FCT Administration had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. The striking unions are demanding the implementation of outstanding agreements, improved welfare packages, and better working conditions.
Security presence around the secretariat was later reinforced, while efforts to restore calm were ongoing. The industrial action by the workers remains unresolved.
More details are expected as the situation develops.
