WIKE THREATENS TO STORM YAKUBU GOWON STADIUM IF RIVERS GOVT BLOCKS RALLY
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has openly challenged the Rivers State Government regarding approval for a planned political rally at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Wike warned that if the state authorities deny access to the stadium again, he would not hesitate to enter the venue to hold the rally, signaling a potential escalation in the ongoing dispute between his political faction and the state administration.
The former governor stated that the rally is part of a wider political engagement and that the decision to deny access to the stadium undermines democratic rights to political assembly. Wike emphasized that his supporters would not be prevented from exercising their constitutional right to gather peacefully.
This development comes amid heightened political activity in Rivers State ahead of upcoming elections, with ruling and opposition parties contesting for influence and control at key events. The Yakubu Gowon Stadium, a major venue in Port Harcourt, has become central to political rallies, prompting tension over approvals and permissions.
As of now, the Rivers State Government has not issued an official response to Wike’s warning, leaving uncertainty over whether the rally will proceed as planned.
Analysts note that the dispute highlights the broader challenges of coordinating political events between federal figures and state authorities, emphasizing the importance of negotiation and adherence to legal processes to avoid conflict.
