OGUN COURT GRANTS ADJOURNMENT IN FATAL CRASH CASE INVOLVING ANTHONY JOSHUA'S DRIVER

Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria

A Magistrate Court in Sagamu has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of British boxing star Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.

Kayode, 46, appeared in court on January 20, 2026 for the continuation of proceedings stemming from the tragic accident on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Lexus SUV he was driving reportedly collided with a stationary truck, killing Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach. Joshua and Kayode survived with minor injuries.

The defendant is facing a four-count charge that includes dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence.

During Tuesday’s hearing, prosecuting counsel Richard Nigiwe told the court that while three of four expected witnesses were present, the prosecution required additional time to finalise preparations. The court granted a request to duplicate the case file and submit it to the Ogun State Attorney-General through the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

Defence counsel Olalekan Abiodun had opposed the adjournment, arguing that the defence was ready to proceed with the case, but Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun ruled that the delay was necessary “in the interest of justice.”

Kayode had been granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties, but remains in custody pending fulfillment of the bail conditions.

The next court sitting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 25, 2026, when the prosecution is expected to continue its case following completion of the legal preparations.
