PENSION CRISIS DEEPENS IN KADUNA AS 20 RETIREES DIE WAITING FOR BENEFITS — NUP
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has raised alarm over what it described as a deepening pension crisis in Kaduna State, revealing that no fewer than 20 senior retirees have died while waiting to receive their long-overdue pension and gratuity payments.
The union disclosed this while addressing journalists on the worsening welfare conditions of pensioners in the state, attributing the deaths to prolonged delays in pension payments, hardship, and declining health conditions among elderly retirees.
According to the NUP, the affected retirees had completed their service to the state but were left without financial support for months and, in some cases, years after retirement.
“These are people who gave their productive years to public service. Sadly, many of them died without enjoying the benefits they worked for,” the union said.
The union lamented that the persistent delay in pension disbursement has exposed retirees to extreme poverty, inability to afford healthcare, and emotional distress, describing the situation as inhumane and unacceptable.
NUP officials called on the Kaduna State Government to urgently address the backlog of unpaid pensions and gratuities, warning that further delays could result in more avoidable deaths among vulnerable retirees.
They also appealed to relevant authorities to prioritise pension reforms, ensure prompt verification processes, and release funds meant for retirees without further bureaucratic bottlenecks.
The union stressed that pension payments are a statutory obligation and not a privilege, urging the government to treat the matter as a humanitarian and moral responsibility.
As public concern grows, stakeholders have renewed calls for transparency, accountability, and swift action to prevent the pension crisis from escalating further.
