US, NIGERIA UNITE AGAINST TERRORISM, BANDITRY AT ABUJA SECURITY TALKS
Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to defeating terrorism, banditry and other security threats as the United States–Nigeria Working Group on Security concluded a high-level strategic session in Abuja.
The meeting was hosted by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and featured a U.S. delegation led by Allison Hooker, alongside top Nigerian security and intelligence officials.
In attendance were Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Lateef K. K. Are, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Discussions at the session focused on strengthening cooperation in counter-terrorism operations, intelligence sharing, community protection strategies and regional security coordination. Both sides also reviewed progress made in enhancing the professionalism and effectiveness of Nigeria’s security and intelligence architecture.
The delegations agreed on the need to sustain and deepen bilateral collaboration, particularly through U.S. support in areas such as defence equipment supply, capacity building and training, intelligence cooperation, counter-terrorism financing, and mutual legal assistance.
Special attention was also given to the protection of vulnerable communities, including Christian communities in parts of Northern Nigeria, as part of the country’s broader commitment to inclusive and people-centred national security.
Observers say the strengthened U.S.–Nigeria security partnership is expected to boost confidence in Nigeria’s defence capabilities and reinforce its leadership role in promoting peace and stability across the West African region.
