NAFDAC CRACKS DOWN AGAIN: AGENCY RESUMES SACHET ALCOHOL BAN, DENIES RUMOURED SHUTDOWN

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has resumed enforcement of its ban on the production and sale of alcohol in sachets and small bottles below 200 millilitres, dismissing claims that the policy would lead to the shutdown of manufacturing companies.

NAFDAC said the renewed enforcement is part of sustained efforts to protect public health, reduce alcohol abuse, and curb underage drinking across the country. The agency emphasized that the policy, which has been in place for several years, is not new but is now being more strictly implemented.

Addressing concerns from industry stakeholders, NAFDAC clarified that it has no intention of shutting down legitimate businesses, noting that manufacturers were previously given ample notice and timelines to comply with the regulation.

The agency stressed that alcohol packaged in sachets and small bottles is easily accessible to minors and contributes significantly to alcohol misuse, particularly among young people.

NAFDAC urged producers and distributors to comply fully with the regulation, warning that enforcement actions, including seizures and sanctions, would continue against violators.

The development has sparked fresh debate among manufacturers, distributors, and public health advocates, with authorities maintaining that the policy is necessary in the interest of public safety.
