NEWS UPDATE: NIGERIA, TURKEY SET $5 BILLION TRADE TARGET
NIGERIA, TURKEY SET $5 BILLION TRADE TARGET AS TINUBU, ERDOGAN PLEDGE STRONGER COOPERATION
During a historic State Visit to Ankara on Tuesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye announced plans to raise bilateral trade between the two countries to $5 billion, up from the current $2 billion. Discussions to achieve this ambitious target have already commenced.
Speaking at a joint press briefing, President Erdogan highlighted the enormous potential for expanding Turkish investments in Nigeria. He said the newly established Joint Economy and Trade Committee would play a key role in facilitating this growth.
“Today, we conducted a comprehensive review of our relations in trade, investment, energy, education, and defence. Our commitment is clear: to reach the $5 billion trade target. We also discussed opportunities to support Turkish investments in Nigeria,” President Erdogan said.
Türkiye currently exports planes, helicopters, machinery, iron, steel, and chemical products to Nigeria, while Nigeria exports crude oil and agricultural products to Türkiye.
President Erdogan praised President Tinubu’s efforts to restructure Nigeria’s economy through the energy sector and pledged support in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, drawing on Türkiye’s own experience combating insurgency.
“Terrorist organisations, particularly in Africa's Sahel region, pose a threat to the peace of the entire continent. We stand by Nigeria under President Tinubu’s leadership. We are ready to share our country’s experience in military training, intelligence, and counter-terrorism operations,” Erdogan said.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude to Türkiye for its commitment to global peace, stability, and prosperity. He emphasized inclusive economic growth that benefits vulnerable populations and highlighted Nigeria’s role in promoting peace across Africa despite regional security challenges.
“We discussed efforts to defeat agents of destabilization and advance peace in Africa. Cooperation with Türkiye will further strengthen these initiatives,” Tinubu said.
At the end of the visit, officials from both nations signed nine agreements spanning defence, trade, education, media, diaspora policy, halal quality infrastructure, and social development—solidifying a framework for deeper collaboration.
The agreements include:
Cooperation in Diaspora Policy
Defence Cooperation
Establishment of the Economy and Trade Joint Committee
Halal Quality Infrastructure
Higher Education Cooperation
Media and Communication Cooperation
Education Cooperation
Cooperation Between Diplomatic Academies
Cooperation in Social Services and Women’s Affairs
The visit marks a significant milestone in Nigeria-Turkey relations, setting the stage for stronger economic ties, enhanced security cooperation, and shared prosperity between the two nations.
