NEWS UPDATE: OIL DISPUTE ERUPTS AS TWO OGUN COMMUNITIES CHALLENGE EBA ISLAND OWNERSHIP

OIL DISPUTE ERUPTS AS ODE-OMI, MAKUN OMI CHALLENGE EBA ISLAND OWNERSHIP

A dispute over oil exploration rights on Eba Island has intensified as two Ogun State communities, Ode-Omi and Makun Omi, lay competing claims to the territory, further complicating an earlier claim by Ondo State.

The disagreement centers on ownership and jurisdiction over Eba Island, a coastal area believed to hold significant oil and gas potential. While Ondo State authorities had previously asserted control over the island, the emergence of rival claims from the two Ogun communities has escalated tensions in the region.

Leaders of Ode-Omi and Makun Omi argue that historical boundaries, ancestral settlements, and traditional records support their respective claims to the island. Both communities insist that Eba Island falls within Ogun State and accuse opposing parties of attempting to marginalize their rights over the resource-rich territory.

The renewed contest has raised concerns among residents, with fears that the dispute could affect peace, security, and economic activities along the coastal axis. Stakeholders have called on the federal government and relevant boundary commissions to urgently intervene and provide clarity.

Analysts note that unresolved boundary disputes involving natural resources often heighten inter-communal tensions and could delay potential development projects in the area.

As of the time of this report, neither the National Boundary Commission nor the federal authorities have issued an official position on the matter. Observers say a transparent investigation and legal resolution will be critical to preventing further escalation.

More developments are expected as discussions continue among state governments, traditional institutions, and federal agencies.
